Charters
  • What if I have medical issues, physical restrictions or limitations?"
Fishing vessels do not offer stable footing while at sea. If you have ANY underlying medical issues, physical restrictions or limitations that affect your ability to stand, walk or otherwise brace yourself while on the boat; please contact Gina at 808-652-4556 before you book your trip. Examples - Hurt limbs, hands, feet, neck or back, elderly, medical conditions, etc. If you show up the day of your trip with obvious physical impairments we will not be able to let you board the vessel.
  • What is your Cancellation Policy & are there any Restrictions?
If you give us notice more than 5 days before your scheduled trip, there is no charge for cancelling. Within 4 days, it is a 50% charge, and if you are a no show or cancel within 72 hours of your trip, it is full charge. In the event your Captain cancels the trip due to weather issues, there is no cancellation charge. Restrictions: If you have a medical condition , you will need to discuss this at the time of reservation so we can make sure we are able to accommodate you and insure you will enjoy your trip. All passengers must be able to maintain their own balance at all times without any assistance. No pregnancies, no recent surgeries, no children under the age of eight. If you have a bad attitude, and no sense of humor, we don’t allow you on the boat. Please respect the boat, as your captain spends more time on the boat than he does at home. Please treat it like you are in his home. We provide an ice chest with bottled water and ice for our guests. there is plenty of room for you to keep your lunches/snacks if needed. No glass bottles or Styrofoam coolers will be allowed on board.
  • What is your "Catch" Policy"
Being that Kauai is a tiny island in the Pacific we do not have the luxury of trucking or flying in fresh fish to support our local restaurants, bars & hotels. Instead they rely on us (local commercial fisherman) to provide them with fresh fish on a daily basis so visitors like yourself can enjoy "fresh fish" while dining out on the island. One Fish up to 50 lbs. may be cut, packaged and shared among the guests on board to enjoy a couple meals while here on island . The fish that will be cut is at your Captain's discretion. The majority of large fish caught are sold to local restaurants and market immediately. ( proceeds from these sales are how we are able to provide our guests with the best tackle and gear available.) Larger fish have a very short shelf life; refrigeration for only 3 days. Freezing fish is just not an option, as the fish will never be the same. With other charter companies having an average 25lb policy, we are one of the most generous companies on the island when it comes to sharing our catch for you to enjoy on vacation. Due to the Dept. of Health and Airline restrictions, We do not process or ship fish off island. If you are here for a large family event and would like to purchase fish at market price please contact Gina at 808-652-4556.
  • How big is the boat?
The Emma is a Bertram 38 Convertible III Sport fisher. At 17 tons and 41 ft LOA, she offers Bertram’s renown ride. A fly bridge 14 ft above the water with seating for six provides a panoramic view of the action and the beautiful coastline of Kauai. She also has a fully equipped indoor seating area and private bathroom. That may not sound like a lot but you'll appreciate this small creature comfort on hot or rainy days and especially when nature calls.
  • Do I tip the Captain and Crew?
Only if you feel they deserve it! How much should you tip is up to you.
  • What should I bring?
A sense of humor and a good attitude ;) When going on a fishing charter in Kauai, it's important to be prepared and have the necessary items with you. Here's a list of things you should consider bringing: Valid identification: Carry a valid photo ID, such as a driver's license or passport, as some charters may require it for verification purposes. Sun protection: Kauai has a sunny and tropical climate, so be sure to protect yourself from the sun's rays. Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF (30 or above) to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Reapply as needed throughout the trip. ( No Spray On SunScreen!!! ) Hat and sunglasses: Wear a hat with a wide brim to shield your face and neck from the sun. Sunglasses with UV protection will protect your eyes from glare and harmful rays. Weather-appropriate clothing: Dressing appropriately for the weather and conditions on the water will ensure your comfort throughout the fishing trip. Layered clothing: Wear lightweight, breathable clothing that can be layered, as the weather can change throughout the day. Bring a light jacket or sweater for cooler mornings or evenings. Rain gear: Depending on the time of year, it's a good idea to pack a lightweight waterproof jacket or rain poncho in case of rain or spray. Non-slip shoes: Choose comfortable, closed-toe shoes with non-slip soles to provide stability on the boat. Personal items: Medications: Bring any necessary medications you may need during the trip, along with any prescriptions. Motion sickness remedies: If you're prone to seasickness, bring the preventive measures you prefer, such as medications, ginger-based products, or acupressure wristbands. Snacks and water: Pack some light snacks and a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated and keep your energy levels up during the trip. Cash or credit card: Carry some cash or a credit card for any additional expenses, such as gratuities for the crew or purchasing extra amenities onboard. Personal items and extras: Camera or smartphone: Capture memorable moments during the fishing trip with a waterproof camera or your smartphone. Towel: Bring a small towel to dry your hands or wipe off any splashes.
  • Seasickness - How to Avoid it.
If you are participating in a sport fishing charter in Kauai and want to minimize the chances of experiencing seasickness, here are some recommendations: 1. Prepare in advance: Take preventive measures before your fishing trip to give yourself the best chance of avoiding seasickness. - Consult with your healthcare provider: Discuss seasickness prevention options with your doctor. They may recommend over-the-counter medications such as dimenhydrinate (Dramamine) or meclizine (Bonine) based on your health and any existing medications you take. - Ginger-based remedies: Ginger has natural anti-nausea properties. Consider bringing ginger candies, ginger ale, or ginger capsules with you to help alleviate symptoms. Start taking them a few hours before your trip. - Acupressure wristbands: Some people find acupressure wristbands effective in relieving seasickness. These wristbands apply pressure to specific points on your wrist that can help alleviate nausea. 2. Stay outside: If possible, spend time on the deck where you can enjoy fresh air and have a clearer view of the horizon. Avoid staying in enclosed spaces with limited airflow. 3. Maintain a steady gaze and focus: Keeping your eyes fixed on a stable point can help reduce the conflicting signals your brain receives. - Look at the horizon: Stare at the horizon or a distant fixed point. This provides a steady visual reference that can help synchronize your senses. - Avoid reading or looking at close objects: Focusing on objects within the boat, such as reading materials or electronic devices, can exacerbate feelings of nausea. 4. Stay hydrated and eat light: Proper hydration and diet can make a difference in how you feel during the trip. - Drink water: Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Dehydration can worsen seasickness symptoms. - Eat light meals: Opt for light, easily digestible meals before and during the trip. Avoid heavy, greasy, or spicy foods that can increase the likelihood of feeling nauseous. 5. Relaxation techniques and distractions: Engaging in relaxation techniques can help calm your body and mind, reducing the likelihood of seasickness. - Deep breathing: Practice deep breathing exercises to relax your body and ease any tension or anxiety. - Distract yourself: Engage in conversations with fellow participants, focus on the fishing experience, or listen to calming music to divert your attention from any discomfort. 6. Consider professional advice and assistance: The crew and captain on the sport fishing charter are experienced and can provide helpful guidance. - Communicate with the crew: Inform the crew if you start feeling unwell. They may be able to provide specific advice or assist you in finding a more comfortable position on the boat. - Follow crew instructions: Listen to the instructions given by the crew regarding safety measures and boat movement. Following their guidance can help you adapt to the conditions and minimize discomfort. Remember that seasickness affects individuals differently, and what works for one person may not work for another. It may be helpful to try a combination of these recommendations and adjust them to suit your personal needs and preferences. If you have severe or persistent symptoms, consult with a healthcare professional for further guidance.
